Growing Your Creative Business
Learning From Soul Talks
One of the things I look forward to every month is recording Soul Talks. It is a fabulous program with speakers on topics as diverse as Feldenkrais to intuitive healing to mandalas as portals to the unconscious. It happens every month and is freely available to everyone.
In the 80's I had the good fortune to train with Dorothy Hll one of the greats in herbal medicine and iridology here in Australia. In my private practice it was not the skills of diagnosis and formulating remedies that were challenging but rather how to operate a small business, in particular how to grow a small business. This continues to be one of the skill that challenges people who are following their passion and are good at it. I guess Soul Talks addresses that to some degree by presenting a forum where practitioners talk about a diverse range of modalities.
It struck me that these Soul Talks are a valuable resource not just as a recorded talk on the internet. You experience the greatest value from the talks as a whole when you attend the live event. You are able to fully engage with the presentations and experience the demonstrations directly. Yet there is more information packed into each 75 minute presentation than anyone can integrate on the fly. With every new piece of information our minds flies off on a tangent to assimilate it. Meanwhile the talk has moved on and we are in catch up mode. Yes, you can take notes as you listen and improve your retention that way And while all the information is there in the recordings (have embedded them on my website in a way that they are easy to find) few people have the time to sit down and rewatch a 75 minute video and learn everything that is contained in it. Each Soul Talk Day has 5 hours of presentations, much more than anyone can reasonable attend to.
Building on Resources You Have Already
From a practitioners point of view the presentations represent an enormous resource for clients and for creating information content for their business website. Wouldn't it it be terrific if there was a way of using their Soul Talk to its highest potential so that listeners could get the most they could from it and at the same time helped practitioners grow their business. Well there is and the post coming up in this series are all about the how too of that.
There is a very effective way of repurposing a Soul Talk for website and social media content. It will be particularly useful for artists, alternate health practitioners and small business owners who are following their passion and are looking for a way of growing their business in a way that isn't all about marketing and salesy taglines. What's needed is a way of growing your business in a way that does not divert you attention from what you love doing most. It will show you how to use examples of what you do every working day to grow your business. Over the next series of posts I will show how to that a Soul Talk or other presentation and turn it into a way of growing your business.
The Journey of Growing Your Creative Business
But be warned. It involves a skill set based on content market that at the beginning will seem quite involved. And frankly there are quite a few "moving parts" that can be confusing in the first instance. There are new things to be learned and a fair bit of technical work to be completed. And if the technical aspects do not appeal to you I can help you there too. When completed you will have a system to grow your business by doing what you love doing, assuming that you love what you do and talking to other people about it.
We will cover a range of topics that include things such as:
- preparing your content
- Making videos and live streaming
- podcasting
- blogging
- marketing strategy
- how to develop you own system for developing your business
- using social media in your system
- paid advertising as an inexpensive way of boosting your efforts
- and perhaps most importantly, how to visualise what you are doing and how you can develop as a person so that it all comes together and works
Avoid the Pitfalls
What you will not find here is how to use scarcity, urgency and other marketing gimmicks to make sales. It is a rich experience of developing your business as you develop yourself. You business is an expression of yourself, of what you love doing and how to put your gifts into the service of others.

Give Yourself Your Best Chance at Success
The next episode will be about developing a creative mindset. It is one of the most important and one that many courses don't address at all. I think it is important too because there will be times on this journey when you become overwhelmed with the amount and complexity of the things being discussed. There will be times that you doubt your ability to do what is required to complete the journey. There will be times that you doubt whether the journey will be worth the effort. Don't worry. I have you covered. As human beings on a journey we will inevitably experience the challenging and the uplifting parts of the creative cycle. Being able to anticipate challenges enable us to recognise them when they come upon us. It is extremely powerful to be able to do so, and it helps us stay true to our course.
